I have been given all authority in heaven and on earth. Therefore, go and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit. Teach these new disciples to obey all the commands I have given you. And be sure of this: I am with you always, even to the end of the age.
Matthew 28:18-20, NLT
Every generation of the Church has stories of heroes in missions—those who give their lives to share the gospel toward a vision for world evangelization. Nearly all the apostles were executed. John Foxe’s Book of Martyrs chronicles stories of Christians who died for their faith. Generations have been inspired by stories of missionaries like David Livingstone, Amy Carmichael, David Brainerd, Adoniram Judson, Hudson Taylor, Jim and Elisabeth Elliot, as well as new stories of those who have given their lives in our generation. “He is no fool who gives what he cannot keep to gain that which he cannot lose.” These words from Jim Elliot’s diary inspired generations of Christians to consider serving as missionaries. Resources like Pray and Go and Follow Me challenge every Christian to engage their world, from the local neighborhood to people groups on the other side of the globe: “Go and make disciples of all the nations!” Further chronicling God at work in global missions is Kenneth Ross’s series, taking an academic overview of the Church in major continental movements.
The rise of short-term mission trips, medical missions, and support of indigenous leaders has changed some of the traditional expectations around being a missionary. But the gospel—the Good News that God became flesh and blood, lived among us, died for us, rose from the grave as living hope of eternal life when we place our faith in him, and lives in us today through the Spirit—compels the Christian to share this hope with a weary world. “Go and make disciples of all the nations”!
Through Gates of Splendor Through Gates of Splendor is the true story of five young missionaries who were savagely killed while trying to establish communication with the Auca Indians of Ecuador. The story is told through the eyes of Elisabeth Elliot, the wife of one of the young men who was killed. |
